What is motivational interviewing?
As a healthcare professional, you play an important role in empowering patients to make the right choice for themselves. Motivational Interviewing is an approach you can adopt to increase the impact of your conversations and empower your patients to take an active role in their treatment decisions. Motivational interviewing pays particular attention to the language of change, the aim being to strengthen the person's own motivation and confidence to change, and commitment to a particular goal.
Within the healthcare setting, Motivational Interviewing has been successfully used in many scenarios, including smoking cessation, medication adherence and alcohol addiction.
