Dr Michael Rowe

Dr. Michael Rowe is a consultant clinical oncologist at the Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust, appointed in June 2024, specialising in the management of urological, upper gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary malignancies. Born and raised in France before moving to the UK in 2007 for medical training, he combines his clinical practice with strong interests in clinical research, medical leadership and education, including co‑hosting the Simply Oncology podcast aimed at both specialists and non‑specialists.

 

Clinical & Academic Focus

  • Consultant Clinical Oncologist at Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust since June 2024, delivering radiotherapy and systemic anti‑cancer therapy.
  • Specialises in the treatment of urological, upper GI and hepatobiliary cancers, working within multidisciplinary teams to provide evidence‑based care.
  • Completed higher specialty training in Clinical Oncology in the South West Peninsula region in 2024, following medical training in the UK since 2007.
  • Brings an international perspective to UK oncology, having been born and raised in France prior to moving to the UK for his medical career.

 

Research & Teaching

  • Strong interest in research, with experience as chair of a national trainee research collaborative.
  • Principal Investigator on a number of clinical trials in his tumour site areas, supporting access to novel therapies for patients in Cornwall.
  • Advocates for integrating clinical trials into routine oncology practice and promoting research engagement across regional centres.
  • Co‑hosts a weekly oncology‑themed podcast, Simply Oncology, providing pan‑oncology educational content for specialists and non‑specialists.

 

Leadership & Honours

  • Significant interest in medical leadership and service development within oncology.
  • Departmental governance lead, with responsibility for clinical quality, safety, incident learning and continuous improvement in the oncology department.
  • Former chair of a national trainee research collaborative, demonstrating leadership in research networks and trainee engagement.
  • Through Simply Oncology, contributes to national educational and professional discourse on contemporary oncology practice.

 

A Personal Note

Dr. Michael co‑hosts the weekly oncology‑themed podcast Simply Oncology, aimed at both specialists and non‑specialists and covering topics across all tumour sites. Alongside co‑host Dr John McGrane, he hopes to bring insight and clarity to an increasingly complex but fascinating specialty, combining his interests in communication, education and high‑quality, patient‑centred cancer care.
