Dr John McGrane

Dr. John McGrane is a consultant clinical oncologist at the Royal Cornwall Hospital, where he has worked since 2014, specialising in radiotherapy and systemic anti‑cancer treatment for urological and gynaecological cancers. He combines a busy clinical practice with a strong commitment to clinical trials, digital innovation and education, including co‑founding the MySunrise cancer support app and co‑hosting the Simply Oncology podcast to enhance cancer care and professional learning.

 

Clinical & Academic Focus

  • Consultant Clinical Oncologist at the Royal Cornwall Hospital since 2014, providing radiotherapy and systemic anti‑cancer therapy for patients with urological and gynaecological cancers.
  • Manages the full pathway of care for uro‑oncology and gynaecological oncology patients, from initial treatment planning through survivorship and palliative care.
  • Particular interest in delivering high‑quality, evidence‑based radiotherapy and systemic treatment in a regional cancer centre setting.
  • Focus on integrating supportive care and patient information into routine practice to improve experience and outcomes for people living with cancer.

 

Research & Teaching

  • Actively involved in the recruitment of patients into clinical trials in urological and gynaecological cancers at the Royal Cornwall Hospital.
  • Has served as UK Chief Investigator in three clinical trials and as Principal Investigator for over 30 urology and gynaecology trials, demonstrating sustained leadership in research delivery.
  • Advocates for embedding clinical research into standard care pathways to broaden access to novel therapies for patients in Cornwall and the wider region.
  • Co‑hosts the Simply Oncology podcast, which has delivered weekly pan‑oncology episodes since May 2024, aimed at sharing contemporary evidence, practical insights and education with oncology professionals and interested non‑specialists.

 

Leadership & Honours

  • Co‑founder of the UK Renal Oncology Collaboration, supporting multidisciplinary collaboration, service development and best practice in renal oncology.
  • Co‑founder and Director of the award‑winning MySunrise cancer patient support app, launched in 2018, which provides locally tailored information and resources and is now live across the South West and West Midlands.
  • Recognised for digital innovation in cancer care through the development and scaling of MySunrise within NHS services.
  • Regular contributor to regional and national meetings on uro‑oncology, gynaecological oncology and digital health, supporting wider adoption of innovative approaches to cancer care.

Dr. McGrane is passionate about improving the experience of people living with cancer, combining his clinical work with leadership in research, digital health and education. Through initiatives such as the MySunrise app and the Simply Oncology podcast, he aims to make expert information and support more accessible to patients and colleagues, while maintaining a strong focus on compassionate, person‑centred care in his day‑to‑day practice.
