Motivational Interviewing

Xarelto BG

Welcome to this course called ‘Motivational interviewing and brief Interventions’.

We hope that you will find the principles and techniques of motivational interviewing, provided by this selection of learning resources from Bayer, helpful in your day-to-day practice with your patients.

Motivational interviewing is a person-centred, collaborative style of communication. It pays particular attention to the language of change, the aim being to strengthen the person's own motivation and confidence to change, and commitment to a particular goal.

Module 1: A comprehensive introduction to MI in clinical settings

View Prescribing Information and Adverse Event Reporting.

In module one, the aim is on developing your confidence and skills in raising a subject or talking about a topic in a non defensive way or not triggering defensiveness in the patient.
It also covers checking what the patient already knows and sharing information and maybe building readiness to change and exploring ambivalence.

Duration: 01:12

Module 2: MI methodology

View Prescribing Information and Adverse Event Reporting.

In module two, the aim is to look at drawing out arguments for change from the patient and building up their confidence or self efficacy for change, because it doesn’t really matter how many reasons we’ve got for a patient to change.
What matters is how many reasons they’ve got. And those are to be discovered.

Duration: 01:25

Module 3: MI in clinical scenarios – demos

View Prescribing Information and Adverse Event Reporting.

In module three, we look at the transition from having a patient talk about why they want to change and how they may do it to planning only if they’re ready. We help them come to a decision and then draw out in a person centred way, a personalised plan for being successful with one or more behaviour changes.

Duration: 01:17

Module 4: Putting MI into practice

View Prescribing Information and Adverse Event Reporting.

In module four, we’ll be raising your confidence in using brief interventions with different topics and different settings. We will discuss an example of a brief intervention relating to medicine taking.
We will also explore the concept of ‘resistance’ in relation to interactions with patients.
